T'Boli

The T’boli is an ethnic group residing around Lake Sebu in South Cotabato. The tribe is most noted for its dream weavers, a group of women who have preserved the spiritual tradition of weaving abaca fiber. These women are said to receive patterns and designs for their weaves through their dreams from Fu Dalu, the spirit of the abaca. They then bring these designs to life solely from their memory. The final fabric is called the T’nalak. It’s an arduous process. The tradition was almost lost had it not been for brands like Filip+Inna creating a desire and demand for all things local and handmade. Now, there’s a new generation of T’b0li girls looking to continue and keep the tradition alive.

Meeting these remarkable women was definitely the highlight of my first trip to Mindanao. Unfortunately, I don’t speak their dialect and I wasn’t able to communicate with them beyond shared smiles and laughter. Nonetheless, their energy was completely warm and welcoming. Their personality, as colourful and interesting as their traditional clothes and culture.
